Is Hoover Dam Worth Visiting?
Yes — Hoover Dam is one of the most impressive engineering achievements of the 20th century and genuinely worth a stop, especially if you are already driving Las Vegas to Grand Canyon West Rim, Sedona, or Page. The dam is 726 feet (221m) tall and 1,244 feet (379m) long, built between 1931 and 1936 by over 21,000 workers. More than 100 workers died during construction. The Art Deco design — unusual for an infrastructure project — includes decorative terrazzo floors, bronze sculptures, and bas-relief panels that make the interior feel more like a government building than a dam.
If you are coming specifically from Las Vegas for the dam, the Power Plant Tour ($25) or Guided Dam Tour ($40) is what makes it worth the trip. A free stop at the bypass bridge viewpoint gives you the best exterior photograph in 15 minutes — but going inside is where Hoover Dam earns its reputation.
If you are on the Las Vegas → Page AZ road trip, Hoover Dam is a natural stopover on US-93 without a significant detour. Plan 1.5–2 hours on-site.

Key detail: the Guided Dam Tour must be purchased at the ticket window on the day of visit — there is no online booking option. In peak season (spring break, summer weekends), these tours can fill up by mid-morning. Arrive before 10am if the Guided Tour is a priority.

Guided Tours from Las Vegas
If you do not want to drive, guided day tours from Las Vegas handle all transport, typically with hotel pickup from the Strip. Tour duration is 4–5.5 hours including transit; on-site time at the dam is usually 1–2 hours. Most tours include entry to the Visitor Center or Power Plant; the Guided Dam Tour (deepest access) is sometimes an add-on.
Common tour formats:
- Half-day Hoover Dam tour (4–4.5 hrs): Las Vegas pickup → dam exterior + bypass bridge + Visitor Center → return. Most affordable option, ~$75–$95.
- Hoover Dam inside tour (5–5.5 hrs): Same as above but includes the Power Plant Tour or Guided Dam Tour on-site, ~$85–$120.
- Hoover Dam + Grand Canyon West combo (10–11 hrs): Full day from Las Vegas with Hoover Dam stop en route to Grand Canyon West Rim (and optional Skywalk). Best value if you want both in one day.
For the inside tour specifically (Power Plant access included):
If you are already planning Grand Canyon West Rim, the most efficient option is a Hoover Dam + Grand Canyon West combo tour:
The Bypass Bridge — Best Free View at Hoover Dam
The Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge opened in 2010 and redirected US-93 traffic away from the dam road, which is now pedestrian-only. The bridge itself is worth a stop: at 890 feet (270m) above the Colorado River, it is the highest concrete arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere. A pedestrian walkway runs along the downstream (south) side with unobstructed views of the dam face and Black Canyon below.
The bridge viewpoint is accessible for free from the Hoover Dam Plaza parking structure (parking $10) — you do not need to buy a dam ticket to walk the bridge path. The view from here — looking north up the canyon with the dam face and intake towers in the foreground — is the definitive Hoover Dam photograph. Best light is late afternoon when the sun hits the Nevada face directly.
Walking the old dam road (now pedestrian-only) gives you a different perspective: standing directly on top of the dam, looking down both sides into the canyon. No ticket required for this either — the dam road is free to walk.
How to Get There from Las Vegas
Hoover Dam is 30 miles (48 km) south of the Las Vegas Strip on US-93 (Boulder Highway). Drive time is 40–45 minutes in normal traffic; allow 50–60 minutes on peak weekend mornings when traffic builds on US-95 South.
Driving directions from Las Vegas
- From the Strip, take I-215 East or I-15 South to US-93 South (Boulder Highway).
- Follow US-93 South through Henderson and Boulder City (~30 miles from the Strip).
- After Boulder City, the road descends into Black Canyon. Follow signs for Hoover Dam / Visitor Center.
- Vehicle checkpoint required: all vehicles entering the dam area must pass through a security inspection point. Commercial vehicles and large trucks have separate procedures. Allow 5–10 extra minutes.
- Parking: Hoover Dam Plaza parking structure, $10/vehicle. Fills by 10am on summer weekends — arrive by 8:30–9am to guarantee a space.
There is no public transit from Las Vegas to Hoover Dam. A rideshare (Uber/Lyft) one-way runs $40–$60 from the Strip; drivers may not want to wait, so a guided tour or rental car are more practical.
Getting There from Page or Antelope Canyon
If you are doing the Las Vegas → Page AZ road trip (or the reverse), Hoover Dam sits naturally on US-93, the main route between the two cities. The distance from Page to Hoover Dam is approximately 230 miles (370 km), about 3.5 hours drive.
Suggested route (Page → Hoover Dam → Las Vegas):
- Page, AZ → US-89 North → Marble Canyon → US-89A West → Jacob Lake → AZ-389 → Fredonia → US-89 North → Kanab, UT → US-89 South → Bitter Springs → US-89A → US-93 South → Hoover Dam (~3.5 hrs, 230 miles)
- Alternative (faster, less scenic): US-89 South from Page → I-40 East → Kingman → US-93 North → Hoover Dam (~2.5 hrs but goes south before coming back north)
Either way, factoring in 1.5–2 hours at the dam leaves a Las Vegas arrival around 7–8pm from a morning departure from Page. This is the natural day-two or day-three itinerary for an Antelope Canyon + Page + Hoover Dam + Las Vegas trip.
Best Time to Visit Hoover Dam
The best times to visit are October–April. The dam is set in Black Canyon — a narrow rocky gorge between Nevada and Arizona that amplifies heat significantly. Summer temperatures regularly hit 105–115°F (40–46°C) in the canyon even when Las Vegas is "only" at 105°F on the Strip.
If visiting in summer, arrive at opening (9am) to do your touring before midday heat peaks. The interior tours (Power Plant, Guided Dam Tour) are air-conditioned — the tunnels inside the dam stay at a constant 50–60°F (10–15°C) regardless of outside temperature. The dam walk and bypass bridge are fully exposed.
Spring (March–May) and fall (September–October) are the ideal months: temperatures are 70–90°F (21–32°C), crowds are manageable, and the canyon light is warm. Winter (December–February) is very quiet with minimal crowds and comfortable temperatures (50–70°F / 10–21°C). The dam itself never closes for weather.
Practical Tips Before You Go
- Vehicle security checkpoint. Every vehicle entering the dam area passes through a checkpoint with a security inspection. This is mandatory — no exceptions. Prohibited items include weapons, explosives, and marijuana. Allow extra time during peak season when queues build.
- No drones permitted. Drone flight is prohibited over the dam and the surrounding federally managed canyon area. This includes recreational drones.
- Guided Dam Tour sells out. It is the only ticket that cannot be pre-purchased online. If it is your priority, arrive early and head directly to the ticket window before exploring anything else.
- Last tour at 4:10pm. The Visitor Center stops selling tickets at 4:15pm and closes at 5pm. If you are arriving from Las Vegas in the afternoon, aim to arrive by 3:30pm at the latest to do a tour.
- Nevada–Arizona state line. The dam sits exactly on the state border. Walk across the dam road and you physically cross from Nevada into Arizona. The two states are on different time zones (Pacific vs Mountain), though during summer when Arizona does not observe Daylight Saving, both sides are on the same clock.
- Photos on the dam are unrestricted. Unlike Grand Canyon West (where the Skywalk bans cameras), you can photograph freely everywhere at Hoover Dam including inside the Visitor Center and on the dam road. The Power Plant and Guided Tour interiors are also photography-permitted.
- Wear comfortable shoes. The dam road and bypass bridge involve flat walking on hard surfaces. Sandals are fine; hiking boots are not necessary. In summer, avoid dark-colored shoes that absorb heat.
How much does it cost to visit Hoover Dam?
The Self-Guided Visitor Center costs $15 per adult (children under 3 free). The Power Plant Tour is $25 per adult ($15 for ages 4–16). The Guided Dam Tour — which includes the elevator descent to the turbine room and historic tunnels — is $40 per adult and must be purchased in person at the dam. There is also a $10 parking fee at the Hoover Dam Plaza parking structure.
Can you go inside Hoover Dam?
Yes — the Guided Dam Tour (45–60 min, $40) takes you inside the dam via the original construction elevator, through the tunnels carved into Black Canyon, to the Nevada wing turbine room and then down to the base of the dam with views of the Colorado River. The Power Plant Tour ($25) also goes underground into the powerhouse but covers less of the interior than the full Guided Dam Tour.
How long does the Hoover Dam tour take?
Allow 1.5–2 hours for a self-guided visit (Visitor Center + walking the dam crest + views). The Power Plant Tour adds about 30 minutes. The Guided Dam Tour is 45–60 minutes on its own. If you come on a guided day tour from Las Vegas, the typical on-site time is 1–2 hours, with total trip time of 4–5.5 hours including transport.
Is the Hoover Dam Power Plant tour worth it?
Yes — the Power Plant Tour is the best value upgrade at Hoover Dam. For an extra $10 over the Visitor Center fee, you descend into the powerhouse, walk along the generators that produce electricity for over a million homes, and get views that are completely different from the dam surface. The Guided Dam Tour ($40) goes even deeper into the tunnel system and is worth it for history and engineering enthusiasts. The self-guided Visitor Center alone is fine for a quick stop but leaves out the most interesting parts.
Can you walk across Hoover Dam?
Yes — the road across the top of the dam (US-93 historic route) is open to pedestrians year-round. You can walk from the Nevada side to the Arizona side across the dam crest, which is about 1,300 feet (400m). Cars are no longer permitted to cross the dam — that traffic now uses the Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, which opened in 2010. The old dam road is now a walking path with unobstructed views of Black Canyon.
Do you need to book Hoover Dam tickets in advance?
The Power Plant Tour and the Self-Guided Visitor Center can be purchased online in advance (recommended in peak season — spring break, summer weekends). The Guided Dam Tour can only be purchased in person at the Hoover Dam ticket booths — there is no online booking option. Tours fill up, so arrive early (before 10am in high season) if the Guided Tour is a priority.
Is the Hoover Dam worth visiting from Las Vegas?
Yes, especially as a half-day trip or on the way to/from the Grand Canyon West Rim. Hoover Dam is only 30 miles (40–45 min) from the Las Vegas Strip and is one of the most impressive engineering feats of the 20th century. Combine it with Grand Canyon West for a full-day trip, or add it to a Page AZ road trip as a natural stopover on US-93. If you are only interested in a quick photo, the bypass bridge viewpoint is free and takes 20 minutes.
What are the Hoover Dam opening hours?
The Visitor Center and tours run 9am–5pm daily (last tour at 4:10pm, last entry 4:15pm). The dam itself — the road and pedestrian walkway across the top — is open from 5am to 9pm. The Visitor Center is closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Parking at Hoover Dam Plaza opens when the dam opens.
