The shots that do not look like that — the flat, grey, disappointing ones — almost always share a single cause: arriving at the wrong time of day.

The Colorado River at Horseshoe Bend sits roughly 1,000 feet below the rim, oriented so that direct sunlight reaches the water surface only in a narrow afternoon window. Before that window opens, the river sits in deep shadow. It does not matter how clear the sky is or how good your camera is — shadow is shadow.
